Exponential Technologies

List of top exponential technologies that will change the world in the near to medium term future.

Solar Power

Photovoltaics (PV) will dominate world power production in the upcoming decades reaching near 100% world power production by around 2030. PV will make electricity generation decentralized and electricity significantly cheaper than electricity from foselfules.

Energy Storage

Electricity storage primarily from photovoltaics will make 100% world power production from photovoltaics possible as well as make most of the worlds transportation fully electric (including cars, trucks, trains, ships and airplanes). Energy storage along with photovoltaics will completely remove foselfules from electricity generation, heating and transportation. At best foselfules will be dedicated to chemical production at worst they will be left in the ground.

Electric Cars

Electric cars will replace the world’s fleet of internal combustion vehicles. They will be cheaper (lower sticker price, lower cost per miles, lower maintenance cost), much higher performance (faster acceleration, better top speed, more responsive, better handling), longer lasting (because there are virtually no moving parts the cars will last much longer for example the electric motor can last literally for centuries) and cleaner (paring electric car with photovoltaic cells makes for 0 emission vehicle) than internal combustion vehicles. In a few decades you might see an internal combustion vehicles as often as you might see a horse buggy today.

Autonomous Vehicles

Autonomous vehicles will not only replace human drivers but also transform the auto industry, auto service and repair industry, insurance industry, medical industry, transportation industry, accident and injury law, emergency response departments, as well as city planning and residential and commercial development.

Gene Sequencing

In 2001 whole genome sequencing cost was around $100 million per sequence, in 2009 it was $48,000 per sequence and in 2014 its $1,000 per sequence. Gene sequencing technology will continue to drop in cost precipitously and will get to a point where reading a person’s whole genome will be done as readily as taking blood pressure and will cost well under a dollar. In time you will be able to read your whole genome from your phone in a few seconds. All medicine will be customized to your personal genome. Every living and fossil species on Earth will be sequenced and analyzed. Every human being on Earth will be sequenced a few times a year and in time continuously monitored just like your temperature might be currently monitored by a health tracking devices.

Medical Devices / Medical Diagnostics

Current consumer medical devices (temperature, blood pressure, perspiration, heart beat, glucose level) will coalesce into wearable always on devices (watches, jewelry, clothes, stickers) that will monitor the user continuously with high precision and resolution. Many of the medical devices currently only enjoyed by doctors or hospitals will proliferate to the consumer level: ultrasound machines, electrocardiography (ECG), electroencephalography (EEG), eye exams, DNA sequencers, verias blood tests, terahertz imaging will all be orders of magnitude more precise as well as faster with costs of hundreds of dollars or less and will be attached to phones or other mobile devices. Using the above devices the user with a help of a domain specific AI agent will be able to diagnose the majority of current elements and get a prescription or treatment without going to a doctor’s office. This will remove a significant burden from doctors and hospitals (upwards of 90%) and let them concentrate on more serious medical conditions that have not yet been dematerialized, demonetized and democratized.

Satellites

New generation of cheap highly capable satellites facilitated by cheap access to space will revolutionize the current satellite industry as well as provide services at a truly global scale. Satellites in low earth orbit (LEO) will operate in swarms of 100s to 1,000s, providing far better coverage and latency than current satellite networks. Communication satellites will provide cheap broadband internet service to mobile devices as well as remote areas, making the cell phone tower obsolete. Surveillance satellites will provide real time imaging of the globe in sub 10 cm resolution in relevant spectrums (visual, thermal, etc…), this data will be available to anyone in the world. Weather satellite swarms will provide highly accurate real time sub km2 resolution weather patterns for the entire globe. Satellite swarms equipped with LIDAR will provide real time sub cm resolution map of the earth. Weather monitoring/prediction, communication, logistics, monitoring (agriculture, pollution, land management, marine environment, earth geology, etc…) will all be revolutionized.
